James Westhead advised that the Government was introducing a new programme called 'Startup Britain' to encourage young people to be entrepreneurs.
Sir Mike Tomlinson advised that the Government had decided to increase the number of UTCs from 15 to 24.
Sir Mike Tomlinson had advised that he would retire as a Trustee at the July meeting.
Alex Triance had been appointed as Director of the Comino Centre at the RSA Academy.
Trustee Meeting 17th May 2011
Sir Mike Tomlinson advised that with regard to the RSA Academy - Lord Paul has made a donation to fit out the Resource Centre - fewer students were applying for university due to fee increases - the IB programme is developing.
As a result of the strategic review the Trustees were recognising that an important area was to focus on the area of social mobility and on the related areas of technical and vocational education, the development of personal capabilities and the provision of information and advice to young people in selecting their pathways in life.

Sir Mike Tomlinson advised that 11-15 proposals for UTCs had been approved with the list being announced shortly.
Jose Chambers had been awarded an MBE for services to higher education in the Queen's Birthday Honours
The annual Comino Gathering at Winchester was considered a success with many positive comments from participants being noted.

Regarding James Westhead it was noted that Teach First had received top marks in all categories in their recent OFSTED report
As a result of the strategic review the Trustees noted that the Foundation's work should concentrate on projects that: plug gaps - create outcomes, not outputs - levetage other investment or initiatives - pump prime work that demonstrates proof of concepts supported by the Foundation
